Our Favorite Holiday Activities

Make Decorations

Craft time! Making your own holiday decorations gives your child the freedom to be creative.
Stringing and hanging ornaments and garland will strengthen their motor skills. You can use ribbon for a safer option instead of metal hooks.

Decorate Together

Once you’ve made your decorations, it’s time to put them up! A small tabletop tree is a great option that’s manageable for your little one. Keep it at their level so they feel empowered to decorate it on their own.

Remember not to go overboard on the decorations–it’s easy to feel overwhelmed when surrounded by bright colors, flashing lights, and glitter!

Take Walks

Getting outside for some fresh air is essential, especially in the colder months when your child isn’t getting in as much movement. Build time in your day to take a walk around your neighborhood or in a park! Another fun way to get your steps in during the holidays is to take a walk and look at the Christmas lights and holiday decorations in your neighborhood.

When you’re walking through the park, ask your child to take note of their senses. What do they see? What do they hear? Or smell? What can they (safely) feel? This gives them a positive view of their environment and encourages them to communicate their feelings and observations.

Try New Recipes

The winter holidays wouldn’t be complete without baking some yummy treats! Food is a great way to connect as a family, and involving your child in the preparation will strengthen their motor skills and form positive relationships with mealtime.

Here’s a list of some great healthy treats to make together!

Read Your Favorite Holiday Stories

Reading is by far our favorite activity at Sugar Mill Montessori. It’s extremely important to make time for reading during the holidays when your child isn’t in school. Reading is the best way to grow their minds, expand their vocabulary, and give them an understanding of the world around them. During the holiday season, bring out holiday and winter-themed books. This is a great way to pass on the tradition of reading your favorite stories from your childhood to your children.
